HIGH SCHOOL SPIRIT

Kannustushuudot ei kyllä loppuneet kesken missään vaiheessa, vaan who let the dogs out kappaleesta Paavo Pesusienen introon löytyi kyllä kannustusta.

TIPS FOR FUTURE EXCHANGE STUDENTS

Now I´m officially halfway through my exchange year, so I decided to make a post about tips for future exchange students!

PRE YEAR:

Choose The Organization:

When choosing the organization you should go through all the options, get some information about all of them and compare one another. Google and ask other people´s opinion what are their experiences and opinions about the organizations. Whit this you should do a lot of research and think thing throughly, because the organization is a big part of your year and can have a big influence on what kind of year you´re going to have!

Choose The Destination:

Seuraava iso päätös on kohdemaa!

Choosing the country where you´re going to spend a one year of your life can be a tough decision! For some people it has always been clear where they´re going, but even then I would recommend you to go through all the options and possibilities. If I would´t have had my ready placement for USA and would have gone through a different organization, I probably would´t be here now... All I´m saying is that spend some time looking through the different options, think what you want from your year and so on, and I think you´ll be able to find the perfect destination for you!

Congrats you´re in!

Sijoiutus tiedot sun muut riippuu ihan teidän hakupaketista joten hoitakaa se hyvin ja ajoissa pois alta niin you´re good to go!

At this point you´re probably receiving all kinds of papers and emails about things you should do, get or fill and my only advice is that make a to do list and take care of all that stuff in order ASAP. Especially those kind of things like visiting the doctor etc. At some point you will most likely just want to cry because there´s so much paper work and all that stuff but trust me it´s all worth it! In the end it´s all the paper work that makes it possible for you to be in that city and in the perfect host family for you. So get it over with and you´re good to go!

Packing:

This girl had a lot of problems with this one. I started packing a day before leaving and when I weighted my luggage it was 25 kg when you can only have 23 and my year started with a one week camp in NY... Honestly I packed very poorly. I have clothing in my wardrobe that I haven´t used even once and I started lagging on basic school clothing very quickly heh... Think thoroughly what piece of clothing you´re really going to use and need and if you can possibly leave it behind when coming back. A big don´t take with you are shampoos etc. They take a lot of room, weight a lot and especially if you´re going to US they are going to be half the price there. So the less your luggage weight the better. But you should still have everything you need tho!

Gifts:

Your host family wont probably expect any gifts from you and the aren´t a must thing, but then again it´s a nice gesture to bring something from your country like candy etc.

DURING YOUR YEAR:

Host Family:

Host perhe on yes tärkein vaikuttaja teidän vuodessa, joten heidän kanssaan kannattaa muodostaa mahdollisimman hyvä suhde alusta alkaen. Tällaset pienetkin asiat on yllättävän tärkeitä!

Host family is probably one of the things that has the biggest impact on your year so I would definitely recommend for you to have as good relationship with them as possible! I know that it´s weird to think that you´re going to live a one whole year with totally random people, but trust me it doesn´t take too long before you feel comfortable with them. Try to be as social with them as possible. Every time your family asks you to go somewhere or do something say yes! Wether it´s a evening walk or going to another city. These little things are surprisingly important. Another key word for a successful relationship with host family is openness... If you´re feeling homesick or something else is bothering your mind, just tell someone in your family, so they won't make their own conclusions...

Friends:

Voi kuulostaa aika surulliselta, mutta ystävät alkaa astua kuvioihin yleensä vasta noin kolmannen kuukauden tienoilla... En siis tarkota että tuutte olemaan ilman kavereia ekat kolme kuukautta, vaan että siinä kohtaa alatte muodostamaan teidän oman kaveriporukan, jonka kanssa vietätte suurimman osan ajasta. Tässäkin kohtaa avainsana on ylläriylläri sosiaalisuus!

Might sound little bit awful, but most likely you´re not gonna have really good friends before your third month... It doesn´t mean that you´re going to be alone the first three months, but usually the third month is when you start form your own group of friends that you spend most of your time with! The key word again is being social!! If you have host siblings, good for you, but it doesn´t really matter if you do or don´t because you should be social and outgoing whatever the situation is. It is just little bit easier if you have siblings that can introduce you to their friends. For example my grouppf friends is mostly my sisters friends and other exchange students. A big no no for exchange students is being picky. However cliché it may sound, but don´t judge a book by it´s cover... As the new foreign kid you can´t afford to be picky. You should try and be as polite as possible to everyone and be thankful when someone offers to help you. At school just go and talk to people even if they are strangers. Especially in US people are most likely to come to talk to you and ask if you need help or so. Trust me you will find the perfect group of friends eventually! Just be social!

Home sickness:

Kerran kuukaudessa on varmaan sellanen minimi. Jos alatte skypettämään perheen kanssa kerran viikossa, ei hostit välttämättä katso hyvällä, vaan ajattelevat ettet vietät kaiken ajan kaivaten kotia etkä nauti olostasi.

For me the first emotions of home sickness came in the middle of the second month when everything was still kind of new and messy. Homesickness comes and goes and all I can really say is that you have to find something that takes your mind off of it. Wether it´s asking your friends to do something fun with you, talking with your host family, going for a hike or even having some chocolate ice-cream while watching movies. Christmas is usually the toughest time of the year but on the other hand it´s also the time when things turn around and after that u wont miss home so much since the last few months are going to fly by... During the holiday you should really try to be active and maybe talk with your host family and ask if you could do something fun or if you could make them something that you would traditionally eat at home. Skyping is a really good way to not miss your family too much but remember not to do it too much. I would say that once a month is pretty good. If you start to Skype with your friends and family every weekend your host family will probably think that you´re not enjoying your stay and spend all of your time missing home.

AFTER THE YEAR:

I guess you just have to go and figure by yourself ;)...

I hope these tips helped at least someone!

SNOW EMERGENCY

We in Finland are pretty much used to the cold and icy winter and it does´t really bother our day to day basis, so you can probably imagine a Finnish person laughing when they hear that schools are being canceled because of icy roads or too cold weather. Have to say that I at least smiled at the thought. Michigan is known to have pretty cold weather and I happened to have my first snow day already in November because of wind and icy roads. Today the school got canceled in the middle of the day in most of the West Michigan area, and we all got to go home early because there was suppose to be a snow storm in the evening. Now it´s actually starting to snow quite a lot... All though it still is pretty much a basic Finnish winter haha :D. Snow days are the best kind of days!

Random pictures from last weeks nice weather

Have a nice weekend y´all !

SENIOR PICTURES

Had to put one of those jokester photos too... I guess I´m gonna be a model

Finally I got myself to actually go and take my senior pictures two days before we are suppose to send them heh... To those who don´t know, seniors have to take "better" pictures of themselves for the yearbook (which anyone can buy at the end of the year), instead of those basic school pictures. Seniors also use these pictures in their graduation invitations & thank you -cards. You  can either go to a studio and get your pics taken by a professional but we decided to go to Frankfort streets & beach with Maddy and got couple of moderately successful shots!

HAPPY 2K15

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all enjoyed your 2014 and are ready to start this awesome upcoming year. I know I definitely am! My New Year was pretty chill with couple of good friends eating, playing board games ( which I apparently am were bad at! ) and just having a great time overall.

Like many of you guys probably have some New Year´s resolutions, I do too, or more likely goals for 2015. I´m going to share couple of them with you with some mobile pictures from last year.

Autumnal run / 2&3 Skyping with my loves /  Never leave your phone in the hands of a Mexican
Decide what to do after graduation. This is probably the most challenging of all of my goals, but at the same time maybe the most important for me. I have never really had a certain occupation in mind nor even a certain thing I want to do and for me this year was all about trying to find something I would want to do or study after I graduate from high school.

1&2 Watching football when there still was kind of warm /
3&4 Best ice-cream and fro-yo!

Improve my english. This is a pretty obvious goal since I´m in exchange. This goal is more for me to try and get rid of my accent and to really get fluent with speaking and writing, which is why I started to write this blog in english ( in case you were wondering )

Boredom selfie with computer /  Playing with Morgans cute puppy Maya /
Doing some lovely Psychology homework... /  Teaching Sara to ice skate ( only picture where we both are standing )

Stay the same weight. The most popular resolution is every year the promise to lose weight or to start living healthier. Exchange students ( girls especially ) are known to gain some weight during their year and since I haven´t yet gained too significant amount of extra pounds I would want to keep it that way so I don´t  need to roll through the airport haha.

Grilled cheese /  Finnish liquorish!! /  Hiking with Sara /  School lunch

Breakfast during weekend <3 /  Ski camp /  Selfie

Save money.  Exchange year is obviously consuming some money before the year and during the year. When I some day go back to Finland I really want to go back to work and save some money for next summer and after high school so I can possibly see my exchange friends and travel some more!

Ski camp with my awesome swiss & dane / 2&3 Team bonding movie night /  Feel the fatness chocolate cake at Bdubs  with Maddy and Paige

New years with my Saras <3 / Getting my room to smell amazing /  Shopping day´s lunch /  Wrestling meet at Traverse City
